In 1519, a group of men set sail from Spain in five small wooden ships under the command of a Portuguese navigator, Ferdinand Magellan. Their voyage is considered by many as the greatest sea journey in recorded history, and today Magellan remains an icon of exploration. He was the first to undertake the circumnavigation of the globe, going west to discover what lay to the east, thus achieving the most difficult nautical feat of all time. In addition to opening up trade routes to explorers all over the world, the voyage proved most fruitful to science. It gave the first positive proof that the world was round and the first true idea of the distribution of land and water.
